An Explanation of Apparatus Names

An explanation of the system used to identify fire department apparatus in Rockland County, New York is supplied to assist the public.

The number "9" on New City apparatus is derived from the Rockland County Fire Radio designations for the 26 fire departments within the county. Originally the numbers were assigned alphabetically. Thus Blauvelt F.D. was designed as Department One. New City is ninth in the original numbering making it "Department Nine". All apparatus, officers and the firehouse radio base station are, therefore, all identified beginning with a "9", for the purpose of short, clear radio transmissions. As other fire departments were established in the 1950's and 1960's they received higher numbers up to twenty-six.

Terms such as "Tower"," Tanker" and "Rescue" are self-explanatory. ATV stands for all terrain vehicles. Engines or pumpers are usually designed by the size of their pumping capacity such as, 1500 or 1750 GPM.
